Everything IEPs (Individual Education Plan)

A student can be given an IEP for any number of reasons. Whether it is Behavioral, Learning, Social based etc. will depend entirely on the students individual needs.

During my time spent observing in an elementary school, I was able to acquire an active redacted IEP of a student currently enrolled in elementary school in British Columbia. Looking at a real world example has allowed me to uncover the mystery behind IEPs, the intent, and desired outcomes…

While specific IEP templates are not mandated in British Columbia, all IEPs will cover the same material.

IEPs focus on positively reinforcing the Core Competency Goals. In this example, the goals or “objectives” for the term are to focus on Communicating, as well as Personal Awareness & Responsibility. Clearly outlined are the strategies for achieving these goals.

In this case, this student has 6 clear objectives to work towards. One of which surrounds the broad goal of Communication. The objective outlined is to answer simple questions about their activities and experiences. The strategy to achieve this objective is for educators working with this student to use visual and verbal cues, modeling language, social stories, play based activities and other strategies suggested by the SLP (speech language pathologist).

IEPs can be updated as frequently as necessary. When a learner has achieved their goals for the term, or if their goals need to updated in anyway, a new IEP will be drafted by all members of the students support team.

The IEPs information will be shared between the educator, EA’s, Parents, and other supporting staff to ensure everyone is on the same page reinforcing these ideas. Everyone will work together on the same skills. This repeated instruction from many different roles reinforces standards for the student, and makes progression clear and attainable.

IEPs are common in schools in British Columbia. As educators, we will teach countless students that have an IEP in our profession. Learning about and becoming Familiar with IEPs is an essential part of our profession and one of our many responsibilities as educators.
